Film historians have approached the history of cinema in many different ways: timelines, movements, theory, the film industry, genres. Film is an expression of a historical, political, social, and cultural state of mind but needs technological, economic, and aesthetic developments to make progress. This lecture course will attempt to cover the spectrum of U.S. film history from silent film to sound film, from classic Hollywood film to contemporary film, without claiming to be comprehensive. There will be texts to read and clips from important films to view for in-class discussion. Goals will be to give a survey of developments, to discuss the industry, to understand technological advances, and to gain insight into the changing aesthetics of filmmaking.
