American Literature and Culture: Word & Image in Early Film

This course deals with classic American films in the first half of the 20th century. The main focus lies on the relationship between word and image in these early films. We will examine these films regarding to title sequences, sound, allegorizations of media, film posters, and other forms of advertising as well as the use of media. Compulsory viewings include: _Birth of a Nation_ (1915, D.W. Griffith) + Intolerance (parts) (1916, D.W. Griffith) _Foolish Wives_ (1922, Erich von Stroheim) _The Thief of Bagdad_ (1924, Raoul Walsh) _The Jazz Singer_ (1927, Alan Crosland) _Morocco_ (1930, Josef von Sternberg _City Lights_ (1931, Charles Chaplin) _M_ (1931, Fritz Lang) _The Public Enemy_ (1931, William A. Wellman) _King Kong_ (1933, Merian C. Cooper und Ernest B. Schoedsack) _Mutiny on the Bounty_ (1935, Frank Lloyd) _Modern Times_ (1936, Charles Chaplin) _The Wizard of Oz_ (1939, Victor Fleming) _Sunset Blvd._ (1950, Billy Wilder)

Course requirements include: active class participation, a presentation, and a 15-20 page research paper.
