Literary Innovation in the American Short Story from E.A. Poe to Postmodernism

The PS will start out from an introduction to the theory of the short story, in which a number of important theoretical statements
from Poe to the present will be discussed. In particular, the effects of the concept of "brevity" on short fiction and the major trends of the American short story will be outlined. In each the following sessions two or three short stories by major authors will be analysed in detail and within the context of American cultural history. Works by the following authors have been selected: E. A. Poe, Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry James, Mark Twain, Hamlin Garland, Ambrose Bierce, Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, James Baldwin, John Barth, and Robert Coover.
Regular attendance and participation in the class and group discussions; reading of the texts in class (from A. Walton Litz, ed., Major American Short Stories), a 12 page paper in English in accordance with the MLA style sheet, a handout (2 pages); presentation of paper in class (ca. 15 minutes), two appointments with course leader - one before and one after the presentation; written final test.

Students must have passed the "Introduction to American Literature and Culture" to attend this course
