This course deals with the development of the media in America, media institutions, and their influences on media culture in the rest of the world. After a survey of the history of American media in general, from oral traditions to early print media, newspapers, television and film, the internet and new, interactive media, we will look at media specific formats, media organizations, and their impact on globalization. We will try to find out what Jeremy Tunstall meant when he said that “The Media are American,” discuss in how far “the medium is the message,” and whether we live in what Marshall McLuhan called the “Global Village.” The aim of this course is to expand the understanding of the media in America and to critically explore their cultural influences
