The aim of this course is to achieve a critical perspective on news coverage in America. After a brief survey of the history and development of the American news system we will deal with the media’s role as the “fourth power” in the state, look at ethical aspects of news coverage, and question the media’s function in society. The discussion will focus on the news in print media (newspapers and magazines), TV, and the Internet. Topics include the virtues of journalism, objectivity in the news, agenda setting in the American newsroom, political influences on the news, publicity versus personal privacy, war reports, photojournalism, and new forms of journalism, i.e. internet news blogs. Based on a comparative approach, the course aims at developing a critical attitude towards current media practices and the American news system.
