Dieser Kurs bietet einen Überblick über die Gattung der Kurzgeschichte in den USA im 19. Jahrhundert.

Besprochen werden Leselistentexte wie z.B. Washington Irving, "Rip Van Winkle"; Nathaniel Hawthorne, "Rapaccini's Daughter" and "The Birthmark;" Edgar Allan Poe, "The Purloined Letter," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", "The Fall of the House of Usher", "Ligeia" and "The Philosophy of Composition;" Herman Melville, "Bartleby, the Scrivener"; Louisa May Alcott, „Behind the Mask;“ Mark Twain, “The 1Billion $ Bank Note;” Ambrose Bierce, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge;" Henry James, "The Beast in the Jungle" and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, „The Yellow Wallpaper.“

Vorträge, Diskussionen, gemeinsame Lektüre von Texten.

Studierende können bereits vor Kursbeginn mit dem Lehrveranstaltungsleiter mögliche Forschungsthemen für die Seminararbeit bzw. Diskussionsleitung besprechen.

Für den erfolgreichen Abschluss des Seminars sind erforderlich: Aktive Teilnahme, eine Präsentation mit Diskussionsleitung und eine Seminararbeit im Umfang von 17-20 Seiten (MLA Style).

positiv absolvierte Pflichtmodule 10, 11 und 12
