To raise students' awareness of the many forms of black American protest, from the more visible, hegemonic modes of resistance to often hidden and highly creative outlets for discontent and criticism.
We will deal with movements, activists, strategies, and achievements of black American protest, always keeping in mind the diversified forms and forces of oppression that they sought to overcome. Topics include: slave revolts, abolitionism; (de)segregation; the legal struggle against discrimination (lawsuits such as _Plessy v. Ferguson_ or _Brown v. Board of Education_); definitions of race and blackness; black protest and issues of gender and class; black Communism and unionism; black nationalism from Marcus Garvey to the Black Arts Movement; black music as protest; etc.
