The goal of the seminar will be for students to understand the significance of literary narratives for the scholarly fields of law and of medicine, and, by analyzing individual texts, to place the narrative content within the context of anthropological, sociological, psychological, philosophical, etc., concerns.
Within the context of the teaching and research units "Law and the Humanities" and "Medical Narratives," the literary "narrative" plays an important role. The seminar seeks to theoretically (and narratologically) investigate the role that such narratives play, as well as to analyze such narratives in regard to contents, technique, and message. Examples of such narratives will be novels and short stories dealing with legal issues, such as the death penalty, moral decisions, the jury system, etc., as well as writings about medical issues, such as pain, disease, death, disabilities, disfigurement, etc.
