The aim of the seminar is to analyze the role and meaning of "portraits" in American literature, also in comparison with protrait painting in the visual arts.

In the visual arts, portrait painting aims at depicting a person in their appearance but also at capturing the essence of his/her personality. In this seminar, a number of American literary texts about portraits will be analyzed in regard to the following questions: What role does the reference to portrait painting play in literature? What are the characteristics of "verbal portraits" in comparison to painted ones? What are the possibilites and the limits of portraits in regard to the "objects" depicted?
