The aim of this course is to enhance students’ understanding of cultural and literary movements by analyzing and working with selected American essays.
In this course we will read and discuss essays, i.e. short non-fiction opinionated pieces of writing, and analyze them according to their influence on American culture, in particular in regard to literary and cultural movements throughout American history. The course will start out with a theoretical approach to essay writing in the U.S. tradition and then concentrate on reading, discussing, and analyzing essays by great American minds and writers from different epochs. The choice of texts is generally based on the reading list and will include texts by authors like Ralph W. Emerson, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry David Thoreau, James Baldwin, Susan Sontag, and others.

primary sources and selected secondary sources will be provided in print and on e-campus
Students must have passed the "Introduction to American Literature and Culture" to attend this course
