The aim of the seminar is to investigate the strategies of coping with suffering that are offered by American pieces of literature.

Suffering is an inevitable part of human existence: We suffer physical and psychological pain, we suffer from diseases, we suffer when we lose a beloved person, we suffer when dealing with the hardships of life, we suffer when confronted with death. The seminar intends to analyze various pieces of American literature that deal with such topics. The aim will be to investigate how such "negative" aspects can be meaningfully integrated into human existence as a whole so that they ultimately do "make sense." Special emphasis will be on the various perspectives of this issue offered by different ethnic groups in the US.
