The Documentary Film: Visions of Reality?

This is a project seminar for Film Studies students who have completed their "1. Studienabschnitt." There are three aims: to acquire a general knowledge of the development of the theory and practice of documentary filmmaking (starting with the Lumière Brothers, Vertov, Grierson, and then concentrating on American documentarists and movements); to have participants make their own documentaries (a short film of 1-2 mins, individually or in pairs); to take part in a workshop on documentary film. It is planned to invite 2 professional documentary filmmakers to discuss their approach to the genre, their films and their methods.
