In this course, we are going to examine the relationship between theatre and film as art forms dealing with representation. More specifically, the course will look at concrete examples of playscripts that have been turned into film. Samples will be biased towards a Canadian context. We will discuss the playscripts as to their theatrical/performative merits, and see what has happened to these merits in the adaptation to film. We will, of course, also include thematic analysis in our approach of both playscript and film. Plays/films that will be discussed include: Shakespeare King Lear, Godard Lear MM Bouchard, Lilies, Greyson, Lilies R Lepage, The Possibilities, Lepage, The Possibilities Dogville Babe Cradle will Rock More titles to follow. We will also look at some films that do not spring from a concrete playscript, but have clearly theatrical origins. The course will have 6 contact hours a week (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) from 5 to 7 p.m. from 2 May until May 31. Students are expected to attend class. One evening a week will be devoted to screening of a film. The other two evenings will consist of lectures, discussion and student presentation. No class on May 5, 16, 17, 26 and 30.
The course will require students to read the assigned playscripts in advance, and prepare assigned theoretical texts on the problem film/theatre. Each student will be required (either individually or with a fellow student – depending on the total number of students – to prepare a class presentation. There will also be a short essay assignment.
Students are expected to attend class, and participate in class discussion. Depending on the number of students, there will be a short oral or written exam. The course evaluation will consist of class participation, class presentation, written assignment, and exam.
