Awareness of theoretical and practical grammatical issues; development of criteria for the analysis of words, parts of speech, sentences and subordinate clauses; general disambiguation and awareness of typical French word, phrase, and sentence structures; 

Word types and their morphological, semantic, functional and distributional characteristics; syntactic functions and semantic roles of parts of speech, sentence types and subordinate clauses; phrases and different types of phrases; 

The course consists of a content part, an exercise part and a presentation part. The contents are taught by the course instructor. In an exercise part, students have the opportunity to consolidate what they have learned, to ask questions and to discuss exercises. In the presentation part, students work independently and present their results in a short presentation.

The individual grammatical phenomena are presented on the basis of both individual observations (inductive) and general theoretical considerations (deductive). The results are illustrated and deepened using concrete French examples. In the following, students will work on individual empirical projects concerning a particular small-scale topic and research question.

Regular attendance and participation, preparation and follow-up of lessons and exercises, 1 written exam (middle of semester) and 1 oral presentation at the end.

Working documents and bibliographical references will be made available during the course.

If possible, completion of compulsory module 6 (= Language I) or sufficient language knowledge for the linguistic analysis of the French language.
