Knowledge of the history of the Spanish novel in the 20th century; knowledge of important authors, works, genres, aesthetics and developments in the Spanish narrative of the 20th century; knowledge of exemplary extracts of the literary works presented.

Presenting analyses and interpretations of important works from different authors, genres and decades the lecture gives an overview over the history of the Spanish novel in the 20^th century, from the so called “Generation of 98” via the literature of the civil war, the Francoist dictatorship and the exile to the transitional period and the present times. It will discuss works by authors such as Pío Baroja, Miguel de Unamuno, Carmen Laforet, Luis Martín-Santos, Miguel Delibes, Juan Goytisolo, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, Javier Marías and others.

Lecture; text analysis; discussion.

Small term papers; active participation in discussions; written exam at the end of the term.

A bibliography will be provided at the beginning of the term.
