Overview of the media cultural history of early film with a focus on the cinematic practices of the early comedians (such as Cretinetti, Léontine and Max Linder), the heroes (such as Fantomas, Maciste or Musidora) and the great divas (such as Lydia Borelli or Rodolfo Valentino) in France and Italy - with a look at Spain and the USA.

Where it all began...The VU traces the media cultural history of silent film from the fairground spectacle to the Golden Years (1920s). After a brief chronological overview, we will focus on the successful genres of the time, such as comedy and comedians (like Cretinetti, Léontine and Max Linder), the heroes of the early crime and action series (like Fantomas, Maciste or Musidora) and the great Italian divas (like Lydia Borelli or Rodolfo Valentino), who anticipated the Hollywood star cult.

In addition, we deal with early film theories, the new dispositive of seeing, possibilities and limits of media-inherent comedy and/or seriality.
