summer semester 2025 | Last update: 08.07.2025 | Place course on memo listIntroduction to the close historical connection between the city and film using selected examples from French, Italian and Argentinian film history.
City and film are in many ways indissociable; film production has its origins in the modern, i.e. industrialised city, namely in Lyon in 1895.
Our analysis focuses on Rome, Paris and Buenos Aires, ‘classic film cities’, which become the protagonists of numerous films. Using selected films as examples, we link film-aesthetic questions with those of modernity and postmodernity, such as the staging of labyrinth, nostalgia, loneliness, architecture, diversity and the right to the city.
