Students will become familiar with methods of film analysis and film theory; they will apply this knowledge to specific films, genres, actors or tendencies in film history; they will become familiar with Soviet / Russian cinema 

During the course we will try to grasp cinema in its different dimensions and functions, which range from visual form and narrative structure to character presentation, from cinema’s social and political functions to entertainment. We will, in a first step, study methods of film analysis as well as film and media theory. In a second step we will apply these methods to Soviet / Russian films.
