Presenting an overview of the history of the native peoples of North America from earliest times to the present-with a focus on native perspectives.
This course focuses on the American Indian experience of history. It will concentrate on the histories of a few Indian people, each selected to represent native experiences of different periods and regions. These will include the Iroquois Confederacy, the Cherokee Republic, the Cheyennes, and the Navajo Nation-along with the pan-Indian movements of the twentieth century. The goal is to introduce students to the variteties of American Indian history and the complexities of its interpretation.
Interactive lecture, with student participation and discussion.
Class participation, homework assignments, and written final exam.
