618020 Architecture IV: Modernologies: Contemporary Art and Architecture reflecting Modernism and Modernity
summer semester 2015 | Last update: 26.02.2015 | Place course on memo listThe aim of the lecture is the comprehension of important theoretical positions of Modernity studies, the recognition of cross-connections between architecture, art and science, the combination of different fields of discourse as well as a critical reflection of curatorial practices. Apart from an introduction to theoretical positions, the seminar also teaches various aspects of working academically. (The title of the seminar is taken from Sabine Breitwieser’s exhibition of the same name.)
Thinking about modernity and modernism has again become an issue in architectural practice as well as in artistic reflection for two decades already. In this seminar, we will track approaches and threads of reception that dominate a contemporary architectural, artistic and theoretical handling of the main topics of Classic Modernism and their repercussions in the present time. Which typological moments link the present to Classic Modernism and where do we need distinctions? Examples taken from architectural and art history will help show the lines of development and will be discussed in comparison with current discourses. Concepts as well as select topics will be mastered and different methodical approaches will be explained.
Presentations, discussions and written work.
This lecture requires continuous assessment based on active class participation and oral/ written presentations.
To be announced in the course.
