Acquisition of basic knowledge and application of relevant methods aiding scientific research.
Zionism is a dream that was born in Europe at the end of the 19th century and whose goal was the renaissance of the Jewish people in the Middle Eastern territory of Palestine. This ambivalence of a "Western" utopia that was to be realized in the "East" has accompanied the Zionist movement from the beginning to the present day. In this exercise we will read different texts by Zionist thinkers in comparison to current attitudes towards Europe in the Israeli media. Through the joint analysis, central episodes and basic ideas in the history of Israel are discussed.
Readings, oral presentation with handout, written paper, discussions, formal lecture, exercises.
Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, active participation in discussions, oral presentation, written paper (16-18 pp.).
Literature/reading-list will be discussed in class. Guided research of selected literature will be part of the required tasks.
Positive assessment of compulsory module 1. The respective proof ought to be produced until the end of October 2024.
Although the readings and discussions will be in English, both presentations and final essays could be held/written in German.
