This course will be conducted entirely in English. Limited enrollment, personal

Topics include: What and where is Central Europe? Historical Memory, "Unborn
Austria"; an Overview of Habsburg History; the Dissolution of the Empire; a Closer
Look at Tyrol.
This course combines lectures, readings and discussions with field observation.
The considerations are historical, anthropological and cultural. Field trips are
integral to the course and will be conducted regularly, both as group and individual
activities. Students are expected to keep a journal of field notes. In addition, each
student shall prepare a written report on an approved topic and present a summary of
this report to the class at the end of the semester. Final grades will be determined on
the basis of roughly equal percentages of the following evaluation criteria:
preparation and participation, field journal, report. Final exam in the form of take
home essay questions.
