EU Borderlands: Ukraine and Belarus since 1991

The purpose of the course is to provide an analysis and understanding of the development of Ukraine and Belarus since independence, focusing on political, economic, and social issues, and relations with Russia and the West.

The course will examine the two borderland states of the expanded EU and provide an assessment of political, social, and economic developments since 1991, with focus on relations with Russia and the EU; democratization in Ukraine; and the Lukashenka regime in Belarus. It would conclude with an assessment of the prospects of the two states for joining the EU and contemporary relations with members of the Union. The first two hours of the course will provide background on Ukraine and Belarus under Soviet rule (World War I, Civil War, Stalin’s Rule, 1928-53; and the later Soviet period, 1953-91).

The course is lecture-based, with some time assigned for questions and an occasional class discussion. It will end with a final exam that is based on multiple-choice questions.

Multiple choice examination, one hour in length covering all aspects of the lectures.
