Students acquire a basic knowledge of the current state of women’s and gender research and get an overview of basic findings of critical gender research.
The students are aware of the social relations in ancient Rome and of theories of gender history an the history of manliness.
We will deal with gender relations in ancient Rome, which are governed by virtus (the ideal of Roman manliness). For this, ancient source as well as research literature on the subject are analyzed. The theoretical basics are Scotts "gender: a useful category" and the history of masculinities, such as Jürgen Martschukat and Martin Dinges have conceptualized.
