Duke Friedrich IV of Austria was born in 1382 as the son of Duke Leopold III of Austria. His rule in Tyrol and the Vorlande was marked by external and internal conflicts. He had to fight with external opponents, the Appenzellers, Venice and the Wittelsbachers, and to oppose an internal opposition of the nobility. He was the first Habsburg to take permanent residence in Tyrol and moved his residence from Burg Tirol and Merano to Innsbruck. He dedicated his late reign years to the fortress of his sovereign power. From the year 1425 his position was consolidated and due to the silver finds in Gossensaß and Schwaz the county experienced a strong economic upswing. Friedrich IV died on 24 June 1439 in Innsbruck.
