Digital ways of analyzing and understanding the past are changing academia at a faster rate than ever before, and one of the most cutting-edge areas using these new opportunities is that of “Digital History” within the broader field of Digital Humanities (DH). Yet often, the gendered aspects of the field are not considered by its practitioners. This graduate course offers a general introduction to digital methodologies in the practice of History — with a focus on gender — to enable students to gain skills and awareness of DH approaches via a series of hands-on “workshops” and traditional course readings.
Students gain the practical experience of “doing” Digital Humanities, and for their final projects, students have the choice to become partners in the professor’s ongoing Digital Observance online geospatial research project, to contribute to already-established projects at the University of Innsbruck’s Forschungszentrum Digital Humanities, or to create DH projects related to their own interests. Students specializing in all chronological periods and geographic areas are welcome. No prerequisite knowledge of digital techniques is required.
The primary language of instruction will be in English, although discussion will take place in either English and German. Readings will include both English and German examples. Assignments will be submitted in English.
