This course examines the missionary activities of Christian orders in East Asia between 1500 and 1800, with a particular focus on missionary activities in Japan within a comparative perspective on China. We will analyse a wide range of primary sources that document religious, cultural, and commercial encounters between European missionaries and East Asian societies: Key source categories include missionary reports, catechisms, travelogues, letters, trade agreements, historical descriptions, as well as material objects and collection items circulated through early modern global networks. Each source will be contextualised according to its type, and examined in relation to the broader historiographies on early modern missions and transcultural exchange.

This course forms part of a collaborative teaching project between the Universities of Kurume (Japan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haruka Oba), Passau (Prof. Dr. Britta Kägler), Bern (PD Dr. Judith Vitale). There will be three to four joint virtual sessions — note that these sessions will end at 12:00 PM. In the joint sessions, students will present source analyses developed during the course, and will also be introduced to examples of Japanese sources for reciprocal comparison.
