645217 UE Historical Sources and Auxiliary Sciences
summer semester 2023 | Last update: 11.04.2023 | Place course on memo listAcquisition of skills for dealing with historic sources and studies critically, as well as the competence to present the newly-gained knowledge verbally and/or in writing; Acquisition of the competence to apply methods of auxiliary sciences.
The ability to read handwritten archival documents is one of the key qualifications of historians. Due to the abolition of the German script in 1941 and the introduction of the Latin script, access to older sources is more difficult and reading skills must first be acquired. However, the examination of handwritten sources is also closely related to the question of how archival records are stored and handed down. Therefore, dealing with filing systems in archives will also be part of the course.
Impulse lectures by course leader, group/individual work and presentations, discussion of obligatory literature, self-study.
One unit is also dedicated to "Transkribus". The workshop will be led by Maximilian Gröber (https://www.uibk.ac.at/geschichte-ethnologie/institut/mitarbeiterinnen/projekt/groeber-maximilian/).
Participation in the discussions, presentation, final test.
Manfred Braun, Deutsche Schreibschrift. Kurrent und Sütterlin lesen lernen, München 2015.
Harald Süß, Deutsche Schreibschrift. Lesen und Schreiben lernen, München 2003.
(These references are to be seen as a basis for self-study. Literature relevant to the examination will be made available in the course of the semester.)
