winter semester 2019/2020 | Last update: 09.05.2025 | Place course on memo list- The students know core concepts on "masculinities" and are able to put them in a cultural studies-perspective with the focus on the category "gender".
- The students are familiar with empirically-based research on fields of "masculinities" and are aware of the relevance of "gender" as analytical category within the discipline of European Ethnology.
- The students learn and practice techniques and methods for the interpretation and the understanding of scientific texts.
In this course we focus on the development of the cultural-science-research on masculinities and men since the 1970s until the present. We will deal with theoretical concepts such as "hegemonial masculinity", "male supremacy" and "toxic masculinity". During the course we will read basic texts as well as empirically based research papers on representations of "masculinities" (such as soccer, advertisment, sport, parental culture, etc.)
Reading, group-discussions, written summaries.
During the course: preparation of the scientific texts, active participation and engagement during discussions. Presentation on a thematic text in one of the course-lessons ("Input").
Handing-in of three written summaries based on selected texts.
