703034 PS Computer Networks and Internet Technology
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 20.10.2021 | Place course on memo listThe learning objective of this course is to understand the fundamental concepts of computer networks with a focus on the Internet. At the end of this course you know general principles of network design, will be able to build and operate Internet-like network infrastructure and be able to identify the right set of metrics and quantify performance as well as the adequacy of design choices of the past or of the future. Furthermore you will have attained the ability to individually acquire similar topics and ask questions on networking topics critically.
In this course we learn how the Internet works and how it is operated. Students will get a comprehensive overview of the key protocols and architecture principles and relevant Applicaitons. Apart from getting to know the state-of-the-Art in network design we will review specific (historic) design choices made and will try to assess them quantitatively. Apart from understanding the fundamentals the course also aims at empowering you with knowledge and hands-on practical exposure to the most relevant tools of todays Internet. Furthermore we will invite several external speakers to shed light on current topics relevant to the Internet's history and future.
The lecture is accompanied by a Proseminar where we will deepen the theoretic understanding with individual exercises and gain hands-on experience with simple programming exercises.
This bachelor class is taught in German. All course material will be made available in English.
Lecture: Written exam.
Proseminar: Grading of written exercises and practical hands on exercises, quiz questions.
The exam is open-book. Electronic decives are prohibited with the exception of a (non-connected) calculator.
