703356 VU Secure and Distributed Computing A: Advanced Distributed Systems
winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 28.02.2024 | Place course on memo listStudents will have acquired the skills to develop, efficiently deploy, and manage distributed and event-driven applications on edge-cloud infrastructures using advanced tools and platforms. They will be capable of optimizing resource utilization, application quality of service (QoS), and service costs through the implementation of advanced resource management, load balancing, autoscaling, and fault tolerance algorithms.
Concept and characteristics of distributed systems from Cloud to Edge computing and Service-oriented and microservice-based applications. Resource management and advanced scheduling algorithms, including Load balancing, autoscaling, failure detection, and fault tolerance mechanism deploying Kubernetes and monitoring tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. Principles of Event-driven systems, stream processing, message queue, and broker.
The first week covers fundamental theory, introducing various concepts and their significance in distributed systems. Then, aach session focuses on different theoretical aspects, followed by exploring practical applications in real-world scenarios using relevant tools and platforms. By the end of the course, students will work on a final project during the last two sessions.
weekly in-class exercises, project development with milestones, final presentation, and written exam at the end of the semester.
Will be presented on the first lecture.
Java, or Python, basic knowledge of distributed systems, and Docker and containerization concepts.
