Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Apply the basic concepts of usability engineering and interaction design
  • Design and evaluate user interfaces
  • Evaluate applications and make informed recommendations for improvement
  • Use heuristics or user-centred methods to evaluate systems
  • Gather and review user requirements
  • Measure user experience in controlled environments and in the real world
  • Consider accessibility in the design and implementation of applications
  • Understand human cognitive and physical capabilities and limitations

This course covers the following topics

  • The origins, history and fundamentals of usability engineering and interaction design
  • The fundamentals of human perception and cognition, and machine form factors and capabilities as a starting point for ubiquitous computing
  • Design principles, key concepts and methods for usability engineering and interaction design
  • Approaches, methods and critical reflection on user testing and evaluation
  • Accessibility and Ethical Software Engineering

This course does not have specific prerequisites.

For students of the Master’s Programme Information Systems: positive completion of the courses referred to in § 7 (2.2)

Allocation of places in courses with a limited number of participants (PS, SE, VU, PJ)

In courses with a limited number of participants, course places are allocated as follows:

1. Students for whom the study duration would be extended due to the postponement are to be given priority.

2. If criterion no. 1 does not suffice for regulating the admission, then first, students for whom the course is part of a compulsory module are to be given priority, and second, students for whom the course is part of an elective module.

3. If the criteria in no. 1 and 2 do not suffice for regulating the admission, then the available places are raffled.
