Knowledge and understanding of components and mechanisms of the climate system, climate change, and its causes; international coordination of climate research and climate politics.
Lectures:
1. Introduction and definitions: the concept of the "climate system";
2. Components, characteristic processes, variables and parameters of the climate system;
3. Principles and basics of modeling the climate system;
4. Observed trends and changes in the climate system;
5. The drivers for fluctuations and changes of climate;
6. The global warming and Sea Level Rise;
7. Climates of the past;
8. Feedback mechanisms;
9. Climate change projections;
10. Climate Research /Politics.
Practicals:
analysing climate datasets (radiation budget, atmospheric reanalysis) and simple climate models with help of the python programming language. Independant quantitative research on topics related to climate dynamics and climate change.
Lectures, practicals.
The VU assessment is based on two elements: group project (30%) and written examination at the end of the course (70%). A positive evaluation in all these elements is necessary to pass the class.
1. The exam (closed-book exam, 1H30, muliple choice questions) will take place on Thursday 2023.02.02, 13:15 - 15:00. Online exam on OLAT requiring presence in classroom.
2. The practicals take place irregulary on Thursdays (the schedule will be communicated at the first lecture). Group projects start in November and have to be returned and presented as a group on Thursday 2023.01.12, 13.15 - 16.00.
Will be presented in the first lecture.
This lecture is designed for students in atmospheric sciences in their 3rd semester of bachelor. We assume maths, physics, and programming knowledge according to the recommended course schedule.
- SDG 4 - Quality education: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
- SDG 13 - Climate action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy.
