Understanding physical relations between the elements of the climate system, understanding and explaining anthropogenic climate change, working with climate data.

Planetary energy balance
General circulation of the atmosphere and the ocean
Energy, and moisture transport in the atmosphere
Major modes of variability: ENSO, NAO
Anthropogenic climate change: greenhouse effect, radiative forcing, feedbacks, projections
Practicals: synoptic climatology based on analyzing atmospheric reanalysis data with the python programming language

Lecture, discussion and computer practicals.

Full grade computed from a written exam (70%), participation to the practicals (0%) and a research project (30%). A positive evaluation in all these elements is necessary to pass the class.

1. The written exam (closed-book exam, 1H30, combinaison of muliple choice and essay type of questions) will take place on Monday 06.02.2023, from 12:15 to 13:45.
2. The practicals take place every other Tuesday. Participation and one group presentation (non graded) is required to pass the class.
3. The projects start before the Christmas holidays and have to be returned and presented as a group on Tuesday 24.01.2023, from 10:00 to 11:30.
