Alle modernen Zivilisationen der Erde fundieren auf Landwirtschaft. Die dazu grundlegende Domestikation und Ausbreitung von Kulturpflanzen nahm an verschiedenen Stellen der Erde zu verschiedenen Zeiten ihren Ausgang. Die LV behandelt die Domestikation von Getreide, Leguminosen, Ölfrüchten und Früchten aufgrund archäologischer, pflanzensystematischer und DNA-Analysen, und beschreibt, warum Landwirtschaft an einigen Stellen im Vorderen Orient, Europa, Afrika, Asien und Amerika erfunden wurde.
