Die speziellen morphologischen und ökophysiologischen Anpassungsweisen von Pflanzen an das Leben im Wasser werden vorgestellt. Daneben sind Abläufe und Steuerungsmechanismen der planktischen und benthischen Primärproduktion sowie deren Rolle für Nahrungs- und Stoffkreisläufe im Ökosystem ein zweites Kernthema.
