Students will acquire knowledge about essential laboratory techniques to execute simple experiments in the synthesis of organic compounds. Laboratory safety and handling of hazards and hazardous substances as well as the accurate set-up of glass apparatus is presented. Methods for the characterization of organic compounds (melting point, boiling point, refractive index, optical rotation) will be discussed. Various experimental procedures will be presented: isolation of compounds by filtration and extraction techniques, as well as distillation and recrystallization.
