The seminar section emphasizes practical skills in macroecology. By the end of the course, students should be able to critically evaluate current research in macroecology, placing current studies in their historical context and connecting them to classical ecological theories and models. Students will be able to identify typical methodological challenges in recent published work. Finally, students will be able to design and implement their own models (e.g., species distribution models, biodiversity models, JSDM), including using publicly available datasets and evaluating the potential uses and limitations of these data.

Companion to VO 743278, registration in the lecture is not compulsory but strongly recommended. Course content will include selected literature discussions following lecture topics, as well as modelling exercises (e.g., species distribution modelling, biodiversity modelling). Basic knowledge of R is required.

50% participation in student-led paper discussions

50% completion of modelling exercises
