744920 SE Special topics in AMO physics: Low-dimensional materials
Sommersemester 2019 | Stand: 25.02.2019 | LV auf Merkliste setzenDer Kurs richtet sich an Doktoranden des DK ALM, die in Gebieten der AMO Physik arbeiten.
Konzepte und Methoden in AMO Physik
Materials of less than three dimensions are at the forefront of present condensed matter research as well as materials engineering. This high level of interest is due to recent discoveries of low-dimensional materials with superlative characteristics, as exemplified by graphene which holds the records for the highest mechanical strength and current density among all materials known to date. Low-dimensional units are also of great importance as building blocks for tailoring an unlimited range of novel materials by applying the bottom-up approach of nanotechnology.
This course focuses on the currently most relevant materials in zero, one, and two dimensions, their properties and their prospects. Specifically, it presents a survey of the physics and chemistry of atomic and molecular clusters, quantum dots, nanowires, and nanosheets. Emphasis is placed on the quantum effects that govern these systems. Essential elements from condensed-matter physics, such as the Bloch Theorem, band structure, or density of states, will be reviewed at the beginning of the course.
Learning objectives:
Having taken this course, students will
a) appreciate the importance of low-dimensional materials in modern materials science and technology;
b) be able to apply strategies introduced in the course to solve basic problems involving nanostructured materials;
c) understand the physical notions that underlie the characterization and design of nanostructured materials.
