800874 EU Heavy Metal Sustainability. On the rocky road to a circular economy: Tracing the life cycle of metals from the past to the future
winter semester 2024/2025 | Last update: 30.10.2024 | Place course on memo listUniv.-Prof. Dr. Fabian Dielmann Univ.-Prof. Dr. Fabian Dielmann, +43 512 507 57005
At the end of the course, students will be able to, adapt and apply skills and theories to new situations and to explore complex issues in innovative ways. Based on what has been learnt, students will evaluate with more attention to different disciplinary perspectives and future problems will be considered critically and described in ways not seriously impeded by omissions.
The course is aimed at anyone who is interested in the sustainable use of metals from any perspective. Taking a long-durée perspective, we will trace the mining of metals from prehistory to the future using selected examples. We will also examine the central role of energy resources and reflect on the life cycle of metals in the context of global material cycles, planetary boundaries and climate change. The course requires very little background knowledge in the fields of archaeology and chemistry and explicitly invites students from other fields to participate.
During the course, we will alternate between frontal teaching and independent work. In various group work formats, students will develop expertise, which we will then discuss in the group. Visits to museums, field trips and company tours will also provide the opportunity to talk to local experts and residents. The creation of posters and video contributions offer a further way to enter into a dialogue with the wider public.
This course is constructed as an Aurora Alliance (AURORA – Universität Innsbruck (uibk.ac.at) course.
Students of all Aurora partner universities are invited to apply for participation in this course from June 03 till July 12 at the following link (after this date, registration via the online course catalogue for Innsbruck students will be possible again, provided there are still places available) students): https://www.uibk.ac.at/en/international/aurora/aurora-course-offerings/universitat-innsbruck/
Information on ranking criteria:
The principle of “first come, first served” applies (criterion 1). In addition, there is a quota of places for the various Aurora Universities (criterion 2). If these places (usually three per Aurora university) are not taken up, these quotas will be passed on to students from other Aurora universities.
Information for students from Aurora partner universities of Universität Innsbruck:
A confirmation of registration or the request to upload personal data for enrolment is not yet a final confirmation of admission; this will only be sent after the whole process has been completed respectively after clarification of any mobility funding (if necessary in coordination with the Aurora home university).

Participants are invited to take part in a BEVI survey (Beliefs, Events, and Values Invetory, thttps://hebevi.com). The online participation takes place before and after the course and requires about 2x30 min. A discussion of the BEVI group results will be offered on request, depending on the interest of the participants.
