summer semester 2026 | Last update: 04.02.2026 | Place course on memo listStudents are able to handle simple design and planning tasks. They are able to analyze a design task, to formulate an architectural program, to create a spatial concept and to translate it into an architectural design of a high aesthetic level. You are able to develop, present and present a project.
„HABITUS“
The content of this course focuses on the analysis of the everyday practices of individuals, working within the field of architecture. Central to the course is the question of the attitude underlying architectural action: why do actors behave in particular ways? Pierre Bourdieu conceptualizes this underlying “why” as an internalized system of dispositions, which he terms habitus. The objective of the course is to analyze, critically question, and empirically investigate the motives of architectural practice, as well as to document and, where appropriate, simulate these processes. The investigation of internalized patterns, such as habitus, forms the guiding motif of our research.
The methodological approach combines the analysis of theoretical texts and film-based material with empirical research methods. Students will conduct interviews, design and carry out surveys, and visit selected projects on site. The final submission takes the form of an individual booklet, produced in accordance with the tradition of the Chair of Architectural Theory.
With regard to image and source referencing, all images, texts, and other materials used must be cited fully, correctly, and in accordance with established academic standards.
Course examination according to § 6, statute section on "study-law regulations".
Assessment is based on continuous participation throughout the semester and the quality of the submitted final project. Interim evaluation statuses will be communicated during announced interim presentations. Attendance is mandatory; repeated unexcused absence (three times) will result in a negative assessment of the course.
Will be discussed in the first lesson.
Excursions form an integral part of the course and serve to deepen the thematic engagement. An excursion to Munich is planned for 26 March 2026.
In terms of its position within the curriculum, this second design studio in the Bachelor’s program at the Institute for Architectural Theory deepens competencies in spatial-empirical research, collaborative work, spatial representation of material, and academic writing. The studio begins with an introductory session and concludes with a joint final presentation.
