Urban players, realities, speculation, consumer products
ZUrban areas, cities and their wider surroundings, are no longer built according to master plans or zoning laws. Such plans and laws have proven endlessly elastic and subject to vast interpretation since decades. Contemporary urban areas develop much rather according to economic waves, accumulations, values and resultant services.
The design studio aims to understand urban players and cultural geographies. It aims to identify how cities emerge and what thrives their development. We will be studying urban areas as results of contemporary cultures and economies. Focussing on how to handle the near future of urbanity, survey results will be processed, tested and implemented within an existing situation to generate an outlook for future environments.
rom diverse historical, cultural and programmatic backgrounds three contemporary urban types can be identified, all of them active and actual as they trigger quite diverse results, cater to the interests of different bodies and, each in their way, result in heavy shifting of the cultural, geographical and ecological balance.
1. simultaneity / networks
mediatic (Los Angeles Olympics, 1984, viewfinder & camera positions)
adaptive (Seattle WTO meeting, 2000, cell phone)
layers and meshes, infrastructures, logistics, food-trucks
(Image: Potteries Thinkbelt, Lagos, Ruhrgebiet, Holland Randstadt …)
2. speculation / mosaic
gated communities, city as object, monochrome society, addition of fragments (Los Angeles, New Urbanism, China abroad, Investorenmodell)
(Image: Dubai, Seaside, The Stone Towers Cairo…)
3. territory / strategy
exportable, reproducible (Reissbrett-Stadt, spanish colonies, the New World, Hilbersheimer's Midwest)
(image: Savannah, Manhattan, Detroit, Leonidov's Magnitogorsk …)
We will focus on urban structures, both analog and digital, and investigate urban development from speculation, risk management, sustainability, personal interest, to name a few realistic common terms in contemporary city planning - a deja-vu from economics and politics.
Action 1 / interpretation
We will explore critical contexts to measure urban areas and ideas, and compare background, approach, models
(presentation April 14, 1400)
Action 2 / experimentation
From findings we will formulate propositions and develop expectations, perspectives, manifestos
(presentation May 5, 1400)
Action 3 / representation
We will develop tool and engage diverse media to implement and test these at a given site, California City, and draw conclusions for a final update on urban development
