ON THE EXISTING: COMPETITION

Transformation und Nachverdichtung der Südtiroler Siedlung St. Johann in Tirol

Das Entwurfsstudio ON THE EXISTING widmet sich der Frage, wie bestehende Siedlungsstrukturen als Ausgangspunkt für eine zukunftsfähige Transformation und notwendige Nachverdichtung genutzt werden können. Im Zentrum steht der Bestand – nicht als Defizit, sondern als räumliche, materielle und kulturelle Ressource.

Untersucht werden Strategien des Weiterbauens, des Umbauens und Ergänzens im Sinne der oft postulierten Bauwende, die Ressourcen schont, einfach baut, graue Energie berücksichtigt und langfristige Nutzungsperspektiven eröffnet. Der Entwurf versteht sich dabei nicht als rein formale Setzung, sondern als räumliche Haltung gegenüber Geschichte, Ort und gesellschaftlichem Wandel.

Das Designstudio ist als studentischer, nicht anonymer  Wettbewerb mit Juryverfahren angelegt. Rund zehn Entwurfsteams (2er Gruppen) erarbeiten Beiträge, die im Rahmen eines Preisgerichts beurteilt und mit Preisgeldern ausgezeichnet werden.

3(33) 33(3) 333 (Zu) Haus

(Zu) Haus lies at the heart of this studio; both as a physical construction and as a meaningful place: zu haus. We ask questions such as: What is a haus? What is zu haus? When does a haus become zu haus? And how can we, as architects, design spaces that enable this transition?

We approach these questions not in an abstract or purely technical way, but from the lived experience of dwelling.
By looking at the work and thinking of architects such as Hermann Czech, Aldo van Eyck, and Alison & Peter Smithson, we learn how seemingly small elements; a windowsill, a bench, a stair, contribute to the habitability of space and to the shaping of everyday life.

Van Eyck emphasized the importance of the in-between space, the transitional zones where public and private overlap. The Smithsons explored "the small pleasures of life" as the basis for a qualitative human living environment, and Czech teaches us the importance of precision: the careful placement of elements in relation to use and meaning.

Life itself becomes the point of departure for making a haus. Together with a framed reference, we first respond to a fascination by defining a fragment; a fragment as an open point of departure that is never finished. This is about construction. About structure, about space, about atmosphere.
We learn to look: at spaces, at details, at furniture, at people.
We draw, reconstruct, and abstract. We discover how construction creates atmosphere and how material choices carry meaning. Through the fragment; a piece of façade, an interior corner, a piece of furniture, we explore how complexity and simplicity can go hand in hand.

3(33) - 33(3) - 333 is not merely an exercise in scale, but a way of looking: an abstract model of thought that functions like binoculars or a magnifying glass. It helps us shift our perspective, to relearn how to see, to frame, to focus.

3 - 33 - 333 is not a calculation, but a method: a conceptual framework that invites us to detach fragments from their context, reinterpret them, and repeatedly search for the essence of dwelling.

Rethinking the way we live, imagine, and reinterpret ourselves; how does this affect the fragment, the construction, the material, the detail? These are aspects that are defined not only by the quality of space, but also by its meaning. Reading references; typology and context. A desire for cooking, sleeping, and living. Finally: being personal; precise and critical.
