848426 PJ Design Studio 2
summer semester 2025 | Last update: 10.03.2025 | Place course on memo listStudents master simple design and planning tasks, which are the result of a constructive narrative. They can analyze a design task, formulate an architectural program, create a spatial concept and translate it into an architectural design of a high aesthetic level.
Group 0 - Ludin:
The aim of the semester is to design a theatre - as an architectural structure that is connected to the sea.
In this semester we are developing architectures that are interwoven with the sea, partly on land, partly under water, half floating, half on land, flooded, between wave crests, dancing in the play of the sea.
The focus of the design is on creating a building structure that is able to accommodate a spatial programme and translate it into an open, spatially differentiated ‘spatial structure’. This means that architecture should not be reduced exclusively to a ‘building concept’. Nor should it be understood as a purely hypothetical construct that eludes the fundamental requirements and judgements of a ‘building’.Our focus moves to the French Atlantic coast. In Brittany and Normandy, the alternation of high and low tides has a decisive influence on people's lives.
The heart of these coastal regions beats to the rhythm of the tides.
Above all, it will be about the poetry of the sea, permanent change and transience and the associated architectural themes; building up, sinking, drifting, being washed away, carried away; The space between land and sea, erosion, instability, discontinuity.
We are inspired by the construction of boats, tidal power stations, wind and wave power plants.
Group 1 - Zottl:
DISORIENTING FORWARD*
EIN FREUNDLICHES ANGEBOT DER ARCHITEKTUR AN DIE PHYSIK
We develop hypothetical visions for the in-between space—both within the built environment and in contexts yet to be constructed. Our curiosity and deep
"inter-est" in the aroma of these spaces drive us forward; encounters with like-minded explorers expand our spectrum. The entire studio orchestrates an invitation to encounters and possibilities through spatial interventions. The existing structures, along with those in the process of emerging and the future built environment, serve as the starting point.
In this semester, we will dedicate ourselves to conceptual exploration and design practice within a specific design task.
We will choose places in northern France to work on and with.
The specific ‘spatial programme’ for the theatre will develop from the individual approaches to this topic. We will take a speculative approach using analogue and digital methods.
We will learn about global wind systems, the dynamics of tides and tidal currents, global water flows, the forces of wind and waves and the celestial mechanics behind them.
Against this background, we want to consciously move in dualisms between abstraction and realism, between ‘universal’ geometric spatial concepts and concrete references to places, and in doing so illuminate, develop and apply different approaches and concepts of architectural and spatial production.
In this semester, we will take a given competition as an opportunity to deal with the concrete design practice, but also with the content-related and creative potential of the addition and subtraction of mass(es) as a space- and form-forming method.
The focus is on the development of (spatial) conceptual ideas in a contemporary architectural context and subsequently on how these concepts can be translated and ultimately applied and materialised with regard to a (concrete) design task.
Course examination according to § 6, statute section on "study-law regulations".
