Sommersemester 2026 | Stand: 07.01.2026 | LV auf Merkliste setzenStudents have the methodological, conceptual and theoretical tools to analyse and interpret the effects of European colonialism on gender systems as well as on the performance of gender
and vice versa of European gender norms on colonialism. They are familiar with current and historical forms of representation of gender and race. They are familiar with basic post- and decolonial theories and can thus recognise the interaction of intersectional inequalities and explain their modes of operation and effects on lifestyles and social structural contexts.
This course examines gender through the lens of decolonial and postcolonial theory, centering the intellectual traditions of Indigenous scholars, scholars from the Global South, and other colonised communities. Students will learn how systems of gender were reshaped and imposed through colonial projects, and how these histories continue to structure contemporary power. Drawing on feminist, Indigenous, and decolonial thinkers, the course analyses how race, sexuality, embodiment, and labour are co-constituted through coloniality. We explore critiques of Eurocentric gender frameworks, the disruption of Indigenous kinship and relational systems, and the colonial production of “modern” gender binaries. Students engage with decolonial critiques and study how colonised communities theorise resurgence, refusal, relationality, and liberation.
The course will use methods such as short lectures, in-class writing exercises, and group discussions.
The assessment will take the form of class presentations, short essays/creative projects and a final essay.
