Abstract:

This course will focus on recent innovations in 3D printing, and emergent technologies which have revolutionized the cross-disciplinary design work of architects and designers. Such novel collaborations within the industry are disrupting traditional craftsmanship and empowering innovation by utilizing emergent technologies. These new methods re-form production and potentially reduce shipping, carbon footprint, material waste, and open opportunities for implementing sustainable processes in production, alongside innovative new aesthetics. Beyond that digital design methodologies enable designers to work cross disciplinary and collaborate with industry partners on innovative cutting-edge research. Furthermore, this course will introduce biomimicry and associated digital design methods such as 3D modelling as well as the creation of tangible objects with 3D printing. Participants will also delve into co-research on materials such as biodegradable plastics, recycled plastics and biomaterials as well ceramic and glass.
