Students will gain an understanding of the practicalities and research approaches associated with online learning environments used for educational collaboration and communication. Special emphasis will be given to asynchronous „discussion“ forums, and the ways that they have been studied by Canadian researchers.
Collaborative learning environments have been developed and conceptualized in Canadian scholarship as "online classrooms,” "learning networks," “communities of inquiry” and "knowledge building environments," to name but a few examples. Focusing especially on text-based discussion forums, this course will provide an overview of this research and development activity, emphasizing its passage from experimental beginnings to widespread implementation. Emphasis will also be placed on the different research methods and preconceptions, as well as the strengths and weakenesses that these research orientations bring with them.
