This seminar will air and analyze fifteen works of film noir, from Huston’s _The Maltese Falcon_ (1941) to Welles’s _Touch of Evil_ (1958). General studies of the topic will be analyzed, including the work of critics who represent such approaches as feminism, Lacanianism, deconstruction, queer theory, and cultural studies. One question taken up by the seminar will be the extent to which cinematic reflexivity reinforces or contradicts constructions of culture and gender.

Each week, films and readings will be discussed in small groups, with individual students making oral presentations to the seminar. One seminar paper is required, as well as quizzes and shorter assignments.

Participation in class; presentation of paper; quizzes, shorter assignments; written paper (15-20 pages)

A list of the films to be viewed will be announced in class. Reading assignments from books and articles including James Naremore, Slavoj Zizek, Marc Vernet, J. P. Telotte, E. Ann Kaplan will be on the reserve shelf.

Students must have completed their "1. Studienabschnitt".
