This course will air and analyze fourteen films by Alfred Hitchcock, from _The Lodger_ (1926) to _Torn Curtain_ (1966). One theme will be the exploration and the implications of what Hitchcock called “the MacGuffin” (or plot pretext) in connection with each film’s constructions of meaning; another will be Hitchcock’s ironic depictions of the “normative” couple.
Each week, films and readings will be discussed in small groups, with individual students making oral presentations. In addition to oral presentations there will be quizzes and shorter assignments. Film viewing (outside of class) weekly, Monday 14.00-16.00 hrs, room 40204, and 16.00-18.00 hrs in the Medienraum.
A list of films to be viewed will be announced in class. Reading assignments from books and articles including Robin Wood, Thomas Leitch, D. A. Miller, Andrew Britton, Robert Stam, Christoper. D. Morris, Donald Spoto will be on the reserve shelf.
