Literature for children/young adults and fantasy fiction both have one vital thing in common: they are frequently frowned upon as a ‘lesser’ kind of literature, less valuable than realistic texts. However, what could be more challenging and alluring – particularly for young readers – than accompanying one’s heroes on journeys through radically different and yet strangely familiar worlds? Ultimately, a good fantasy novel does not only give its young readers insight into its own intricate universe but it also says a lot about the culture in which it was written. In this course we will analyse several key texts in the field of fantasy writing for children and young adults, focusing on the ways texts, reality and readership interact.
